Conversation: The conversation between Mrs. Putnam and Rev. Parris regarding the loss of her seven children
Desired Outcome: Mrs. Putnam’s desired outcome is to have Reverend Parris announce that he has discovered witchcraft, as she believes that it is the reason why her seven children died. Mrs. Putnam: Reverend Parris, take my word, my seven babies were more cheerful than you can imagine. And yet, they would all wither in my arms the night they were born. I haven’t said anything, but my heart has been loud. I see my only surviving child, Ruth, becoming strange. This year, it seems like she may die too, so I thought it would be smart to send her to your Tituba. Parris: To Tituba! What may she —? Mrs. Putnam: Mr. Parris, Tituba has acquired the knowledge of speaking to the dead. Parris: Goody Ann, it is highly sinful to call upon the dead! Mrs. Putnam: I take it on my soul, but who else will inform us of the person who murdered my babies? This horrible situation I am in is something no one should ever have to experience. I demand answers! Witchcraft, I plead with you convince Reverend Parris that you are the reason my beloved babies are dead! (apostrophe) Parris, horrified: Woman! That is nonsense! Mrs. Putnam: They were murdered! Remember this proof! Last night, Ruth was close to their spirits. There was a clear connection! What else would cause her to be shocked to such a great extent besides an evil force that would take away her ability to speak? It is a huge sign, sir! To be indifferent about this issue is being satisfied with innocent children dying. (comparison) Parris: I blame Abigail for the conjuring of the spirits last night. I refuse to declare anything associated with the notion that I have discovered witchcraft, especially in my own home. I will be toppled for performing this action! Mrs. Putnam: I will cling to the slither of hope that I have left. I will be proven right! As you claim you will be at harm for revealing the truth, I insist that you will make it absolutely clear that witchcraft was used on my children! (concession) Parris, swayed: I will lead the village in a psalm, but I will not discuss witchcraft and it should not be mentioned, or there will be consequences. The cause is unknown. There has been so much disagreement regarding this topic, and I do not want any more. Mrs. Putnam: This will not end here. Not only have I lost far too many of my children, but the only one remaining is deeply troubled. Her soul appears to be flown away. She sleeps and yet she walks. She cannot eat. She recently tried to leap out the window. She was on the highroad, waving her arms as if she could fly. She is suffering. (anaphora) Parris: I found Abigail, my niece, and ten or twelve of the other girls dancing in the forest last night. It was done in secret -- Mrs. Putnam, unable to wait: Your slave has knowledge of conjuring. Parris, to Mrs. Putnam: We cannot be completely sure of that, Goody Ann -- Mrs. Putnam, frightened, very softly: I am aware of that, sir. I sent my child and she should have the right to figure out, from Tituba, who the monsters that murdered her sisters were. To Hale: Is it a natural work to lose seven children before they live a day? Parris: Sssh! No further information should be disclosed.
